The therapeutic alliance

The concept of the therapeutic alliance has been discussed by many authors, over many years, including Bordin (1994) and Safran and Muran (2000). Included as attributes of the therapeutic alliance are:

the bond between the client and counsellor

the counsellor’s empathic understanding

a level of agreement between the client and counsellor with regard to the goals and tasks of treatment.

Research involving adult clients has shown that the quality of the alliance fluctuates over time, even within a particular session (Safran et al. 2011). Counsellors who work with young people can confirm that this is especially so for the adolescent age group. It is important to recognize, however, that the therapeutic alliance is one of the best predictors of psychotherapeutic change (Horvath and Symonds, 1991). It is therefore essential that when we are working with young people we pay attention to the quality of the therapeutic alliance throughout a counselling session.
